Home massage therapy is safe and beneficial for most people. It promotes relaxation, relieves muscle tension, and supports overall well-being. However, in certain situations, treatment may need to be adapted or postponed to ensure it’s as effective, comfortable, and safe as possible.
- When to Avoid Massage Entirely
There are a few cases where massage should be avoided altogether. If you’re experiencing a fever, have a contagious illness such as a cold or the flu, or are under the influence of alcohol, recreational drugs, or strong prescription pain medication, it’s best to reschedule. Massage should also be avoided if you've recently had surgery or a serious injury, if you're dealing with nerve inflammation (neuritis), or if you have active skin infections or certain skin conditions.
- When to Avoid Certain Areas
In some instances, massage can still be performed, but specific areas of the body will need to be avoided. These include areas affected by varicose veins, unexplained lumps or swelling, bruises, cuts or abrasions, sunburn, or localized inflammation such as arthritis. During pregnancy or if you're experiencing any kind of unexplained pain, your therapist will take extra care to work around sensitive areas.
- When Medical Permission Is Needed
If you have a more complex medical condition, it's important to speak with your doctor before receiving massage therapy. Conditions that may require medical approval include heart and circulatory issues (such as high blood pressure, thrombosis, or heart disease), ongoing treatments for chronic conditions, oedema, and skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. Additional concerns include osteoporosis, cancer, neurological or mental health conditions, epilepsy, diabetes, and nerve-related issues like Bell’s palsy or trapped nerves. Gynaecological infections also fall into this category.
